The Eyes of Your Heart
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of his calling, and what are the riches of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe!” Ephesians 1:18-21
The purpose of seeing in the spirit, seeing with the eyes of our heart, or spirit, and having the eyes of our heart enlightened is mostly found in this great verse. The purposes I have found in Scripture and the fruit of my experiences are:
- So that we know the hope of His calling on our life.
- The riches of His calling: on our life, unto Salvation, and unto the good works He has prepared for us in advance to do.
- That we don’t have to wait until death to see the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.
- And so that we may see the greatness of His Power toward us who believe.
- That we may see that greater is He who is with us, than he who is in the world.
- To see how much the enemy is outnumbered (2 Kings 6:17)
- To see and expose the fiery darts and schemes of the enemy.
- To grow our faith.
- To see what we are to pray over people
- To give them messages from the Father about how He sees them.
- To equip and encourage the Saints.
- To see what God sees
- To decree His will on the earth
- To bind and loose
- To avoid deceptions
- To grow in discernment
- To heal, and set captives free
- To partner with the plans and blueprints of God
- To see how high and wide and wonderfully He thinks
- To expose the plans of the enemy
- To see and understand how much He loves us and knows us
- To increase intimacy with the Father
- To discern good and evil
2 Kings 6:16-17 Clearly shows that not all spiritual sight is from the enemy. “’Don’t be afraid’, the prohet answered. ‘Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ And Elisha prayed, ‘Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.’ The Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Oh how I love this verse. My eyes were once opened to see an epic battle in the spirit, and as I saw my friend in the spirit, she was wielding a sword with her amputated arm [in the natural she is missing an arm, but her spirit man did not seem to notice], and dressed in full battle gear. Put on the full armor of God! For we do not fight against flesh and blood! There is a real enemy, and your spirit never sleeps but is right now, currently, in a battle you cannot yet see. Fight the good fight. And pray that the Lord opens the eyes of your heart that you may see and believe that He is the author and finisher of our faith.
Spiritual Encounters in the Bible
It is not always clear whether people were seeing things in the ‘natural’ or ‘in the spirit’, in the body, or out of the body, but it is for sure that most of the people in the Bible would be on Schizophrenic meds for all the encounters we would dub hallucinations today. . We are drugging our Seers at an alarming rate, when we really need to turn back to God’s psychiatry and not the witchcraft of Pharmakeia. Sorry, but God’s opinions and mine are usually not popular. Please spend some time looking up these verses, asking God to speak to you about how spiritual sight differs from third eye sight. How do these stories make you feel? How do the things of God differ from the things of the world or the enlightenment the enemy promises? Does it bring separation from God and shame, like the encounter in the Garden of Eden, or does it make you hunger and thirst for His Righteousness, so that all these things can be added unto you?
Using the eyes of our heart, God speaks to us through Dreams, Visions, Trances and many more ways. I do not dream nearly as much, but I have multiple kinds of waking visions, and have had several trances, some more intense than others. Some people primarily dream. When I do dream, I can often tell the different between a prophetic dream and just a dream originating from me, my mind, or my imagination. According to James Goll in his book, The Seer, he does well to remind us that the goal of any encounter is to enhance our love for Jesus and further our understanding of God’s purposes and plans.

These verses and many more in the Bible show that God speaks to the prophets, to unbelievers, to men, to women, both in the Old and New Testaments. Some of them see and hear in dreams, some in open visions, audible voices, or fell into a trances. God is the same yesterday today and forever and is no respecter of persons. He will use any imperfect person He chooses because that is all He has to work with. I am no different. In my past I was a liar, a thief, a fornicator, a drunkard, and a descendent from at least third generation Masonic cult members, and many more marks I am sure the enemy had on me during the decade I turned my back on God. But I was a sinner, and now I am an heir of Salvation. Praise God! He makes all things new and uses whom He chooses.

“Open my eyes, Lord, so that I may see. Help me to increase in the gift of discernment and discerning spirits. Lead me to test everything. Help me to know whether something comes from the demonic realm, the soulish realm, or through the Holy Spirit and your Kingdom of Righteousness. Flan the flame of my desire for the Word, for Holiness, for purity, for letting no unclean thing enter my eyes, my thoughts, or my imagination. Let me cast down every vain imagination that sets itself against You.
